Can’t wait for our tours? Here’s some fascinating London facts to keep you going!

1. There are more languages spoken in London than in any other city in the world.

2. Believe it or not, If London was a country it would be the 8th biggest in Europe.

3. Angel Tube Station, has Western Europe’s longest escalator with 318 steps, I suppose you could call it a tourist attraction. It does seem to go on forever.

4. It takes 61 seconds to open Tower Bridge, which opens about 1,000 times a year.

5. The well known landmark, Marble Arch was originally built as the entrance to Buckingham Palace, but was never used. There is actually a tiny office inside it, which use to be used as a police station.

6. The tallest building in London and the Europe, is the Shard.

7. The Houses of Parliament also known as the Palace of Westminster, has over 1,100 rooms, 100 staircases and 3 miles (5 km) of corridors, as well as 19 bars and restaurants, which I’m sure those robbing MP’s are never out of when they are actually there!

8. London is formed by two ancient cities – City of London and City of Westminster, both cities forming the region of Greater London

9. The London Underground, was built in 1863, which is known as the ‘Tube’, and was the first metro of the world.

10. Big Ben is not actually the name of the clock or the tower! It’s the 13-ton bell inside the clock.

Does the Queen need a new bike?

It is normally no laughing matter when your car will not start on a freezing cold day..but luckily the Queen managed to see the funny side.

The Queen’s Bentley, said to be worth £10m, refused to come to life after a church service at Sandringham.

Standing nearby, the Queen was seen laughing and pointing as her chauffeur tried to coax the motor into action outside St Mary Magdalene church on the Norfolk estate.
Eventually the car’s V8 6.75 litre engine finally spluttered into life at the seventh attempt and the Queen, climbed in for the quarter-of-a-mile drive back to Sandringham House.

The Duke of Edinburgh walked to and from the church as normal, despite the freezing weather. Maybe they should have cycled on one of our great bikes?

Did you know..?

Windsor Castle

· The castle is spread over the equivalent of 269 tennis courts and is more like a fortified town.

· Windsor Castle estate (including Windsor Great Park) has over 450 clocks. When British Summer Time (BST) begins, it takes the Queen’s clock maker 16 hours to move every clock forward by one hour. At the end of BST it takes him 18 hours to adjust them back one hour (as he actually has to move them forward 11 hours!)

· When Hitler was planning his takeover of Britain he decided that he would keep Windsor Castle as one of his homes so consequently Windsor Castle and Windsor were never targeted during the war.

· It takes 8-10 people 2 days to lay the table for the banquet table at Windsor Castle. Each guest has 46cm allocated to them on the table.

Sixty Photographs for 60 Years at Windsor Castle

THE DRAWINGS GALLERY EXHIBITION

“The Queen: Sixty Photographs for Sixty Years”
4 February to 28 October 2012
Sixty photographs of The Queen, including the work of leading press photographers of the past six decades, will go on display at Windsor Castle to celebrate Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee. The exhibition presents a portrait of The Queen’s reign as captured in fleeting moments on both official occasions and at relaxed family gatherings. With the advent of photography, the boundaries between the officially approved and the spontaneously captured image of the monarch were irreversibly blurred. Today, through the reach of modern media, the image of Her Majesty is familiar to millions around the world. Most of the exhibition The Queen: Sixty Photographs for Sixty Years has been selected from photographs submitted by the Royal Rota press organisations.

Vintners Vs Dyers

The infamous swan-upping has the Vintners pitched against the Dyer’s swan-uppers as they aim to gather and tag as many swans on the Thames as possible…not forgetting the Queen’s very own “uppers” who release the birds untagged.

Vintners make wine, and with several abodes to keep stocked for the Royal family you can imagine they have quite a wine cellar to keep in order.

The monarchy have entered the age of technology and now monitor & manage their wines online. So much so that the company that supplies the software has just been awarded a much coveted Royal Warrant.

To achieve such a warrant you must supply goods or services to the Queen, Duke of Edinburgh or Prince of Wales for a minimum of 5 years. There are around 850 Royal Warrants in circulation, so the next time you go shopping in London, keep your eyes peeled for the seal of approval above the front door.

If you can’t find any, just take a little walk down Jermyn Street…happy shopping!

Veni, Vidi, Da Vinci…

It seems like the whole world has gone bananas over the recent Leonardo Da Vinci exhibition at the National Gallery in London. Grown men have been known to weep in the knowledge that the show is sold out.

However, fear not. You can still glimpse some rarely seen drawings from the Queen’s Windsor collection at Birmingham’s Museum & Art Gallery.

The works show da Vinci’s interests in painting, sculpture, engineering, botany, mapmaking, hydraulics and anatomy.

The exhibition is running as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebration.

The only downside is that you have to go to Birmingham…

Have a wufferly day out…

We English absolutely adore our dogs and Mind The Gap Tours has a lovely King Charles Cavalier spaniel as our faithful companion.

Our love affair with dogs has probably been caused by a right Royal love affair. When King Charles II came to the throne in 1660, dogs enjoyed an unprecedented place in the Royal household. Queen Victoria kept as many as 75 dogs in the kennels of Windsor Castle. Currently Queen Elizabeth has five dogs, all direct descendents of Susanne, the corgi she received as a gift on her 18th birthday.

An Englishman’s home may be his castle, but it is nothing unless manned by at least one woofer…
